January 1, 2020
Before deciding on the right conferences to attend in 2020, there are some considerations as it could prove to be costly in terms of both time and money. Selecting the best fit can be difficult, there may be some that you should attend and others that you wish to attend. Do your research in advance! You might consider in making the right choice:
Conference Agenda: You won’t really know how good the content is until you arrive, but you should have a reasonable indication in advance. You should really be interested in most of the topics covered so that you are not spending 2 days for what is effectively a couple of hours of relevant content. If the conference is packed with relevance for you, chances are you will meet lots of liked minded people.
Speakers: Know the background to the speakers, they will need to have an excellent and interesting CV to make attending worthwhile. There may be YouTube videos of previous lectures, do some research.
Attendees: Most conference organizers publish a list of attendees in advance. Conferences are an excellent networking opportunity. Ensure that the majority of attendees are in roles similar to your own background and not mainly from consultancies or government agencies.
Return on Investment: Think about what you want to gain most from the conference: new customers, suppliers, mentors, training, best practices, insight into the future of your industry etc. Will it be worth the investment?
Location, Location, Location!: Most conferences are held in major cities and you will have to consider if it is convenient to travel, the cost of travelling and hotel accommodation.
